Fruits and Vegetables: The Secret Weapon for Summer Eye Sun Protection

In the hot summer, it's not enough to just take care of our skin; our eyes need protection too. The ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight, especially blue light, can cause significant damage to our eyes. They can penetrate the eye's lens and reach the retina, causing photochemical damage to the retina and directly or indirectly damaging cells in the macular area.

Our eyelids and eyebrows are gifts from nature, acting like "sun protection devices" for our eyes. Additionally, many people choose to wear sunglasses in the summer because they can absorb UV rays, preventing direct sunlight from hitting the eyes. However, relying solely on these is far from enough. Experts have offered three suggestions to help us protect our eye health through diet.

Vibrant red tomatoes, bright orange carrots, yellow-green lettuce, deep pink raspberries, and golden lemons. When we see such a beautiful picture, we often say it's "a feast for the eyes." Not only do colorful foods look beautiful, but they can also provide rich nutrition for our eyes.

Suggestion 1: Eat more yellow-green fruits and vegetables

Yellow-green fruits and vegetables can filter blue light. Lutein and zeaxanthin are members of the carotenoid family, a group of pigment compounds. These two pigments give foods their beautiful yellow-green colors, such as vibrant green spinach, bright green peas, and deep yellow corn. Furthermore, once these pigments enter the body, they accumulate in the light-sensitive tissues at the back of the eye. These tissues protect the eye by filtering blue light. Other sources of lutein and zeaxanthin include romaine lettuce, kale, broccoli, avocados, Brussels sprouts, zucchini, and kiwi.

Suggestion 2: Eat more fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin C

Fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin C are antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralize oxygen free radicals—highly reactive molecules that are naturally formed in the body as part of normal metabolic processes. As long as there is a high concentration of antioxidants present, they can effectively neutralize the free radicals formed. Inhibiting free radicals is particularly important for the eyes, as the lens of the eye has a high concentration of Vitamin C.
