Chestnuts Can Cause Bloating, Don't Overindulge (Photo)
It's the season for the sweet aroma of chestnuts, with street-side roasted chestnuts and chestnut chicken on the table that are simply mouth-watering.
Chestnuts are a nutritious nut known for strengthening the spleen and stomach, boosting qi, nourishing the kidneys, and benefiting the heart. They make for a healthy snack, but it's best to limit yourself to just a few at a time, as eating too many can easily lead to bloating.
Those looking to lose weight should reduce their intake of staple foods like rice when eating chestnuts. This is because the carbohydrate content in chestnuts is only about 30% less than that of rice, so overconsumption can easily lead to excessive calorie intake, which is not conducive to weight management. That said, chestnuts are as filling as rice but have a lower glycemic index, making them a suitable choice for diabetics when consumed in moderation, provided they are not sugar-coated.
