US FDA Warning: Eating Raw Oysters is Dangerous
Oysters are delicious and nutritious. This is evident from the description of oysters in the classic story "My Uncle Jules." Some even say that eating raw oysters is an unparalleled delicacy, second to none. However, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning, advising people not to eat raw oysters. This is because this seafood may be infected with viruses such as Norovirus.
So, should oysters be removed from our tables? No need to worry. Because after being cooked, oysters no longer contain this virus, and people can eat them with confidence. The FDA also reminds people that all seafood should be cooked thoroughly as much as possible, which can greatly reduce the risk of bacterial and viral infections.
Since eating raw oysters is risky, how can we cook them to be healthier and more delicious? And when buying, how can we select the best oysters? The following suggestions are worth adopting.
When buying oysters, choose those with completely closed shells; do not pick ones that are already open. If you choose to boil them, cook the oysters until the shells are fully open; it is best to boil them for another 3-5 minutes after the shells open. If you choose to steam them, put the oysters in only after the water is completely boiling; after the shells are fully open, steam them for another 4-9 minutes. At the same time, note that during the steaming process, try to use a small pot and avoid using a very large pot to cook too many at once, as this may cause uneven heating and some oysters may not be fully cooked. Also, do not eat oysters that do not open during the steaming or boiling process.
