Vitamin B12 for vegetarians

Vegetarians need to supplement with Vitamin B12 to prevent memory decline

Vitamin B12 helps maintain the normal function of nerve cells and red blood cells. People deficient in Vitamin B12 may experience various symptoms, including memory loss.

Dr. Glenn Smith, a clinical neuropsychologist at the Mayo Clinic in the United States, explains that generally, Vitamin B12 is found in animal-based foods, including fish, beef, pork, and poultry. If you consume these foods in small amounts, you should be aware of a potential Vitamin B12 deficiency. The elderly and vegetarians are the primary groups at risk for Vitamin B12 deficiency. If they experience memory loss, they can get a check-up at a hospital. If they are deficient in Vitamin B12, they can take Vitamin B12 supplements under a doctor's guidance.

For patients with Alzheimer's disease, Dr. Glenn Smith points out that there is currently no evidence that Vitamin B12 can improve their memory. However, Vitamin B12 is still an indispensable part of a healthy diet.
