3 Interpersonal Traps for Female Office Workers

New female graduates entering the workforce will find themselves working alongside colleagues from diverse backgrounds. So, how can these new office ladies avoid the "interpersonal traps" of their professional lives?

1. The Mature and Stable Male Supervisor

A career-focused male supervisor often spends more time with his female secretary than with his own wife. It's only natural for feelings to develop over time, especially if the supervisor is a bachelor. However, if he is already married but due to frequent professional contact, seeks the benefits of an affair, his female subordinates must be extremely cautious.

Once personal feelings enter the workplace, the superior-subordinate relationship becomes strained, making it difficult to work smoothly. It could even lead to a moment of indiscretion that ruins one's life—a price not worth paying.

2. The Self-Important Colleague

He is subservient to his superiors, pleasant to his peers, and a tyrant to his juniors. His words are excessive and aggressive; he goes around in circles before making a point, lacking a central idea and failing to get to the heart of the matter. He brings up "old scores" and lists the few "major accomplishments" he has done for the leadership. He constantly throws around terms like "old employee" and "senior," making sure everyone knows he is an "old-timer," especially towards new hires, he instills the idea that the company can't function without him. If someone asks him a question, it gives him another chance to perform. What could be explained in three sentences, he insists on delivering a long, thesis-like speech, leaving the questioner utterly confused.

When dealing with such a self-important person, you must first learn to be patient, then listen, and say more flattering words to make him feel superior. However, when you can no longer bear it, you must learn to put him in his place, reminding him, "You're not to be trifled with!" and "You work for the company, not for him alone!" A person who bullies the weak and fears the strong will learn to respect you and no longer look down on you.

3. The Client Who Invites You for a Drink After Work

Many sales jobs inevitably involve drinking with clients. However, you should avoid going for a drink with one client alone after work unless you have already established a good business relationship with this person and are certain they will respect your professional boundaries.

If this person holds a high position and has significant influence, and you are keen to build a connection with them, you might take this more relaxed opportunity to inquire about their developments and pave the way for yourself. However, if you go with them, please note two things: it's best to go in a group, and don't drink excessively.

Whether you drink or not is purely a matter of personal preference; don't feel embarrassed. You can order soda or a cocktail. Besides, regardless of gender, being a good drinker is not the only way to gain acceptance. To earn a man's respect and acceptance, demonstrate your professional competence and attitude, not your ability to out-drink them. For a professional woman, a drinking occasion can be a dangerous place, as in the heat of the moment, one can easily lose their rationality, leading to verbal conflicts or inappropriate behavior that completely ruins their professional image.
