Brown sugar is a red crystalline substance made by pressing the stems of the herbaceous plant sugarcane (Poaceae family) and refining the juice. Also known as: Sand sugar, Red sand sugar, Purple sand sugar, Yellow sugar pieces. It is rich in sugar, minerals, and glycolic acid.
Many people are curious if the currently popular Japanese "Kurobuto" (black sugar) is the same as the traditional brown sugar we refer to. The answer is 'yes'. Traditional brown sugar and the various popular black sugars today are made by the same method, have the same nutritional value and health benefits, so they can be considered the same thing.
