Has your "waist age" exceeded the limit?
Whenever we talk about a woman's waist, we tend to focus more on its circumference and shape rather than its health index. In our minds, there seems to be a misconception that a woman's waist is one of her ultimate weapons for beauty, while its other functions are not very important. In fact, besides beauty, the waist is our lifelong companion. The health of our waist is related to our overall physical condition, and only by maintaining waist health can we build that slender waist on this foundation.
If you neglect to care for it, it is more prone to injury. When you are overly tired, after sitting or standing for long periods, when wearing low-rise pants, during the postpartum confinement... have you considered that your waist is also bearing the load with us? Health is a lifelong matter, and for women, nurturing the waist is no different.
Has your "waist age" exceeded the limit?
Age, bone age, psychological age... the "ages" that affect human health have now added a new member—waist age.
How can you prevent your lumbar spine from aging prematurely? Try a simple health-boosting exercise on your chair: cross your hands and hold your neck, push your abdomen forward, and tilt your head back. Hold for a moment, then relax. During work breaks, repeat this three to five times. It provides a great stretch for the cervical and lumbar spines and can effectively relieve the burden caused by the reverse force on the spine from sitting for long periods.
In addition, get up and move around every hour or so; even just walking a bit is beneficial. It's best to do some jumping exercises, gently bouncing a dozen or so times. Don't underestimate this simple move—it has therapeutic effects too! When you jump, your entire body is in motion, which helps coordinate the joints and muscles. Even minor misalignments in small joints can be corrected during the process.
Why protect your waist health?
Women engaged in long-term standing work, such as in textiles, dyeing, hairdressing, or sales, may experience weakened tendon and ligament elasticity in the waist due to prolonged standing. Excess lactic acid can accumulate locally, inhibiting the normal metabolism of the waist muscles, leading to lumbar muscle strain and pain. Frequently carrying heavy objects puts excessive strain on the waist, easily causing scoliosis and resulting in lumbar muscle strain and pain.
Lumbar muscle strain accounts for the largest proportion of chronic lower back pain. It is often caused by improper or missed treatment after an acute back injury, repeated injuries; or from maintaining an unbalanced posture for long periods during work, such as constant bending; or from poor habitual posture. Individuals with congenital malformations of the lumbosacral spine have inconsistent movement on both sides of the lumbosacral area, making the soft tissues in that area more prone to fatigue and causing pain. Patients have a history of long-term, recurrent lower back pain. There is aching discomfort on one or both sides of the lumbosacral area, which varies in severity and is persistent. The pain worsens with exertion and eases with rest, and it is related to weather changes. During acute flare-ups, all symptoms are significantly aggravated, and movement of the waist is limited.
Nurturing and protecting your waist every moment
1. Exercise your waist muscles
Walking backward, yoga, jogging, etc., can all exercise the waist muscles. Additionally, you can often twist your waist and do the "flying swallow" exercise in bed before sleeping. For office workers who sit for long periods, you can do chest expansion exercises at intervals (with your elbows level), as well as backward waist stretches and upward pulls.
2. Keep your waist warm in all seasons
Menstruation and childbirth can both damage kidney qi, so women should always pay attention to keeping their waists warm. For example, during the postpartum confinement period, wear long clothes to protect the waist to prevent back pain associated with "postpartum illness."
3. Nourish the kidney yin
If you experience excessive menstrual flow, frequent cold lower back pain, or a low libido, you should promptly nourish your kidneys. Women should focus on replenishing kidney yin to enhance their resistance. You can eat more kidney-nourishing foods such as goji berries, Chinese yam, longan, and walnuts. You can also often take traditional Chinese patent medicines like Liuwei Dihuang Wan. For those with yin deficiency and fire excess, Zhibai Dihuang Wan can be taken. For those with kidney yang deficiency causing back pain, Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan can be taken.
4. Moderate sexual activity and use contraception
Multiple induced abortions can easily damage the kidneys and cause inflammation. Sexual activity should be moderated, and contraception should be used.
5. Use a mattress of moderate thickness
The waist has a natural curvature, so the mattress can be moderately thick and of medium firmness, allowing the waist muscles to fully rest.
6. Avoid high heels
Don't wear very high heels, as they easily increase strain on the waist. Those who stand or walk for long periods should avoid wearing them as much as possible. Also, avoid low-rise pants during menstruation and breastfeeding. High heels can create a beautiful posture for women, but they are also one of the "killers" of female health. A reminder: try to take off your high heels in your leisure time to let your feet relax and relieve the strain on your waist.
