What to Eat for a Cold Body: 4 Foods to Help Regulate It

It is common for women to have a cold constitution, cold hands and feet, and menstrual pain. Traditional Chinese Medicine theory holds that this is a reflection of qi deficiency, qi stagnation, and insufficient yang energy. During special physiological periods such as menstruation, pregnancy, and postpartum, women are more prone to cold hands and feet due to a weaker body. If not prevented in time, it can lead to poor mental state and an aversion to cold.

1. Ginger

The ginger we're talking about here is not meant to be eaten raw, as not many people could stomach that. We simply mean to buy fresh ginger when you buy ginger. The more I explain, the more confusing it gets. People who cook often should know what ginger I'm referring to. Ginger itself has a certain effect of warming the body, so eating some ginger is also beneficial for women with a cold constitution. In the hot summer, as the secretion of saliva and gastric juice in the human body decreases, it can affect appetite. If you eat a few slices of ginger before a meal, it can stimulate the secretion of saliva, gastric juice, and digestive fluids, increase gastrointestinal motility, and improve appetite. This is the reason for the common sayings, "Eat radish in winter, eat ginger in summer," and "If your meal isn't fragrant, eat ginger."

2. Jujubes

Jujubes have been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times and were recorded in the "Shennong Ben Cao Jing" (The Divine Farmer's Materia Medica). They are mentioned in medical texts throughout history, and the understanding of their health-preserving and therapeutic properties has deepened. To this day, jujubes are regarded as an important tonic. Li Shizhen, in his "Ben Cao Gang Mu" (Compendium of Materia Medica), said: Jujubes are sweet in taste and warm in nature, able to tonify the middle jiao, replenish qi, nourish blood, and promote the production of body fluids. They are used to treat "spleen and stomach weakness, poor appetite, loose stools, and qi and blood deficiency." Regular consumption of jujubes can treat physical weakness, neurasthenia, disharmony of the spleen and stomach, indigestion, fatigue-induced cough, and anemia with emaciation. Its function of nourishing the liver and preventing cancer is particularly outstanding, hence the saying, "Eat three jujubes a day, and you won't show your age even at a hundred."

3. Lamb

Li Shizhen, in his "Ben Cao Gang Mu" (Compendium of Materia Medica), said: "Lamb can warm the middle, tonify deficiency, replenish qi, whet the appetite, and strengthen the body. It benefits kidney qi, nourishes the gallbladder and improves vision, and is used to treat 'deficiency-induced cold, five strains and seven injuries'." However, lamb has a strong odor and is a heavy burden on the digestive system, making it unsuitable for people with poor stomach and spleen function. Like pork and beef, excessive consumption of such animal fats can put pressure on the cardiovascular system. Therefore, although lamb is delicious, one should not overindulge. It should be consumed with caution during hot summer weather or by people with a fever.

4. Walnuts

Many people might be surprised to learn that walnuts actually have this effect, but the fact is, they do. They play a certain role in alleviating women's cold constitutions. Not only that, but walnuts also contain a relatively high amount of protein and essential unsaturated fatty acids for the human body. These components are important substances for the metabolism of brain tissue cells and can nourish brain cells and enhance brain function.
