Qiaoguo recipe on the Qixi Festival

Qixiao Festival Treats: A Guide to Making Qiaoguo

Qixiao Festival, China’s Valentine’s Day, is incomplete without *qiaoguo*—crispy, patterned biscuits symbolizing love and skill. Making these treats is a cherished tradition, and here’s a simple guide to crafting them at home.

Start with the dough: Mix 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, and a pinch of salt. Gradually add ½ cup warm water and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, kneading until smooth. Let it rest for 30 minutes. Roll the dough into a thin sheet (about 2mm thick) and use cookie cutters—traditional shapes include flowers, animals, or characters from love stories—to create intricate designs.

For a sweet touch, brush the *qiaoguo* with beaten egg or milk before baking. Some fill the centers with red bean paste or sesame for extra flavor. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 15–20 minutes until golden brown.

Once cooled, the biscuits can be strung with red thread as decorations or gifted to loved ones, embodying the festival’s spirit of craftsmanship and affection. This hands-on activity not only honors tradition but also adds a delicious, personal touch to the celebration of love.
