Ru Yi Xiang Gan, or "Aspiring Tofu Skewers," is a beloved Chinese snack known for its savory, slightly sweet flavor and chewy texture. Here’s a simple guide to making it at home.
Ingredients: 300g firm tofu, 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp oyster sauce, 1 tsp sugar, 1/2 tsp five-spice powder, 1 tbsp sesame oil, 1 chopped garlic clove, 1 tbsp vegetable oil, and optional dried chili flakes for heat.
Steps:
1. Prep Tofu: Cut tofu into 1cm thick rectangles. Press gently with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
2. Marinate: In a bowl, mix soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, five-spice powder, sesame oil, and garlic. Add tofu, ensuring each piece is coated. Marinate for 20 minutes.
3. Cook: Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Pan-fry tofu for 3–4 minutes per side until golden. For a chewier texture, air-fry at 180°C for 10 minutes, flipping halfway.
4. Finish: Drizzle with remaining marinade and sprinkle with chili flakes. Garnish with sesame seeds and serve warm.
Variations: Add Sichuan peppercorns for numbing spice or honey for extra sweetness. Enjoy as a snack or side dish!
