Some office workers skip breakfast, but this can easily lead to the failure of the gastrocolic reflex, and over time, it can cause constipation. To prevent constipation, eat some fiber-rich foods for breakfast.

In healthy individuals, the rectum is usually free of stool. The "orthostatic reflex" upon waking in the morning and the "gastrocolic reflex" after eating breakfast cause the colon to generate strong "mass peristalsis," which pushes stool into the rectum. When a certain amount of stool accumulates, it creates the urge to defecate. Therefore, it is best to develop the habit of having a regular bowel movement every morning. Eating breakfast in the morning also promotes the "gastrocolic reflex," which is beneficial for the body's detoxification.
To prevent constipation, breakfast must include dietary fiber, such as oatmeal, whole wheat steamed buns, steamed sweet potatoes, fruits, and vegetables. Vitamin B1, abundant in coarse grains, can protect the gastrointestinal nerves and promote intestinal peristalsis. Additionally, eating a banana for breakfast can also have a laxative effect, but only fully ripe bananas have this function. Eating unripe bananas will not only fail to relieve constipation but can actually worsen it. This is because unripe bananas contain more tannic acid, which inhibits gastrointestinal motility.
