A study suggests that frequently consuming foods with a high Glycemic Index (GI), such as white rice and white bread, can increase the risk of lung cancer by 49%. Consequently, many people equate eating white rice with smoking, believing it can cause cancer. So, does white rice really cause lung cancer? Is eating white rice truly the same as smoking?
According to the study, researchers compared 1905 lung cancer patients with 2413 healthy individuals. The results showed that patients with the highest daily dietary GI had a significantly higher risk of lung cancer (49% higher). Among smokers, those with a high GI diet had a 31% higher risk of lung cancer than those with a low GI diet. The paper concluded that the overall quality of dietary carbohydrates affects cancer risk, and a high GI is correlated with the incidence of lung cancer. Foods with a high GI include white rice and white bread. As a result, many people have concluded from this report that white rice causes lung cancer and is as harmful as smoking. This interpretation is actually a distortion of the original research. Claiming that eating rice is equivalent to smoking is purely a fear-mongering headline, and normally eating rice will not cause lung cancer.

Lung Cancer Prevention Measures:
Smokers, please quit smoking immediately. 8 hours after quitting, the oxygen level in your blood will return to that of a non-smoker, and the carbon monoxide in your body will be halved. After 24 hours, all residual carbon monoxide will be gone. After three months, your lung function will improve, and the efficiency of your lungs will increase by 10%. If you are already a lung cancer patient, quitting smoking can restore your immune function, improve your physical strength, and prevent cancer and other diseases.
Be vigilant against "kitchen fumes." Ensure your kitchen is well-ventilated; turn on the range hood when you start cooking. Do not turn off the range hood immediately after cooking; keep it on for at least another 3-5 minutes. Do not wait for the cooking oil to smoke when frying; use less frying and deep-frying methods. Keep the living room and bedroom separate from the kitchen to prevent contaminated kitchen air from entering other living areas. For those living in rural areas, indoor coal stoves should have chimneys that are regularly cleaned to ensure they are clear. For newly renovated houses, be sure to use environmentally friendly materials. It is recommended to ventilate the house for at least three months before moving in after renovation.
Increase your intake of vegetables and fruits in your diet, especially foods rich in carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, folic acid, and trace element selenium, which can reduce the incidence of lung cancer. Vitamin A helps maintain the integrity of cell membranes, the normal metabolism of epithelial tissues, and blocks the process of cell canceration, so you can consciously increase your intake of it. It is most abundant in animal livers such as sheep liver and chicken liver. At the same time, maintain a regular lifestyle, be happy in your mood, balance work and rest, exercise, and increase your ability to prevent and fight diseases.
