The weather is dry, and many people suffer from a dry mouth, a parched tongue, and a scratchy throat, so it's natural to reach for a throat lozenge. In fact, this method is not entirely correct. For a scratchy throat, try this tea.
Recently, a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physician has encountered many patients with these symptoms. He says: Most throat lozenges on the market are health foods that contain cooling herbs like mint and dandelion, which can clear heat and reduce fire. Because of these cooling ingredients, throat lozenges can alleviate symptoms like a dry mouth and throat pain to a certain extent, but they are not suitable for long-term, continuous use.
Honeysuckle Tea
The TCM physician believes that the causes of a scratchy throat can be broadly divided into two types: deficient fire and excess fire. Besides the common symptoms of a scratchy throat and swollen throat, those with excess fire experience obvious thirst, a preference for cold drinks, and may also have a quick temper, irritability, insomnia, etc. Those with deficient fire are thirsty but dislike cold drinks and may have symptoms like hot palms and soles. Because those with deficient fire should not take cooling herbs, they should especially avoid eating too many throat lozenges.
For those with a scratchy throat, you can drink Chinese herbal teas that have effects such as clearing heat, generating fluids, moistening the lungs, and soothing the throat. For example, use 5g of honeysuckle, 5g of Ophiopogon japonicus, 3g of Platycodon grandiflorus, 2-3g of raw licorice, and 2-3g each of Malva nut and Tibetan chebula fruit. Steep these in boiling water and drink as a tea substitute. It should be noted that people with poor spleen and stomach function should not drink too much of it.
