According to a report in the Mexican newspaper "El Cronista" on the 21st, the latest research shows that chewing gum can enhance memory, control weight, and relieve stress.
Mexican expert Lucila Torres said that the action of chewing gum increases the level of hemoglobin, which is responsible for transporting oxygen to the brain, thereby improving the brain's ability to learn, store, and recall information. In addition, when chewing gum, a person's heart rate increases and more energy is consumed, which in turn suppresses the secretion of stress hormones.
According to the report, researchers at Northumbria University in the UK divided volunteers into three groups for a memory test: those who chewed gum, those who imagined they were chewing gum, and those who did not chew gum. The results showed that the memory of those who chewed gum was 35% higher than those who did not, and those who imagined they were chewing gum also performed well in the test.
In this regard, experts have proposed two hypotheses. One hypothesis is that chewing gum can increase heart rate, thereby increasing blood supply to the brain; another hypothesis is that the body releases insulin when chewing gum, which enhances brain memory.
Previous research has found that chewing gum can cause people to secrete more saliva, which in turn stimulates the stomach to secrete gastric acid. Many young people suppress their appetite by chewing gum.
