Six Ways to Identify Poisonous Mushrooms

Mushrooms provide the human body with a wealth of nutrients, enhancing its ability to resist diseases. However, we don't seem to be very clear about what nutrients mushrooms actually contain. Our common attitude of "to each their own" prevents us from better utilizing their value. Therefore, we advocate for "mushrooms, mushrooms, we all love them" so that we can better improve our health! At the same time, how to identify poisonous mushrooms and guard against food poisoning is of utmost importance.

1. Comparison Method:

Using a color mushroom guide suitable for local use to identify local edible or poisonous mushrooms one by one is a good method.

Shopping Reminder: To improve appearance and extend the "shelf life," unscrupulous merchants may soak mushrooms in fluorescent brighteners.

2. Observe the Shape:

Poisonous mushrooms are generally sticky and slippery, often with debris on the cap or patch-like growths. The stem often has a ring (like a miniskirt). Non-poisonous mushrooms rarely have such rings.

3. Observe the Color:

Poisonous mushrooms are often golden, pink, white, black, or green. Non-poisonous mushrooms are more likely to be coffee-colored, light purple, or reddish-gray.

4. Smell the Odor:

Poisonous mushrooms have a potato or radish smell. Non-poisonous mushrooms have a bitter almond or fruity smell.

5. Examine the Secretion:

Tear the stem of a freshly picked wild mushroom. Non-poisonous mushrooms secrete a clear, water-like fluid, sometimes white, and the cap does not change color when torn. Poisonous mushrooms secrete a thick, dark brown fluid that changes color easily when exposed to the air.

If you are not certain that a mushroom is non-poisonous, do not eat it. If you accidentally consume a poisonous mushroom, you should promptly take effective measures such as inducing vomiting, gastric lavage, and purging, and seek timely medical attention and treatment at a hospital.
