How to prevent rice from getting weevils?

Many people browse the local market in their free time to buy a lot of ingredients, especially rice. However, if stored for a long time, the rice can become infested with insects. So, what are some methods in daily life to prevent rice from getting bugs?

Rice with bugs is edible. The insects that grow in rice are generally clean and do not carry viruses. As long as they are removed and the rice is washed thoroughly, it can be eaten normally. There's no need to throw away an entire bag of rice just because there are a few bugs in it, as that would be a huge waste. In fact, rice is not very prone to getting bugs under normal conditions because it is usually very dry with low moisture content, an environment that is not suitable for insects. The reason rice stored at home is prone to bugs is simply because it has been stored for too long.

One, Airtight Storage Method:

First, spread the rice to be stored in a ventilated area to dry completely (note: do not expose it directly to the sun). Then, put the dried rice into a food-grade plastic bag with low permeability (it's best to fill the bag), seal the opening tightly, and store it in a cool, dry place. This way, the rice can be preserved for a long time.

Two, Pepper Anti-Insect Storage Method:

Sichuan peppercorns are a natural antioxidant with a special fragrance that repels insects. The specific method is to place 20 to 30 peppercorns in a pot, add an appropriate amount of water (enough to soak the rice bag), and bring it to a boil on a stove to release the peppercorn's aroma. Then, remove the pot from the heat, place the rice bag into the peppercorn water until it is thoroughly soaked, and then take it out to dry. Next, pour the rice into the bag. Additionally, wrap a few small bags of peppercorns in gauze and place them in the upper, middle, and bottom parts of the rice bag. Seal the bag and store it in a cool, ventilated place to prevent insects from infesting the rice.

Three, Plant Ash Moisture-Absorbing Storage Method:

At the bottom of a jar used for storing rice, spread a layer of plant ash (it's best to put the plant ash in a gauze bag and place it at the bottom of the jar). Then, pour in the dried rice and seal the jar tightly. Store it in a cool, dry, and ventilated place to preserve it for a long time.

Four, Kelp Anti-Insect Storage Method:

Dried kelp has strong moisture-absorbing properties and can also kill insects and inhibit mold. When storing rice, mix the rice and dried kelp in a 100:1 ratio. After about 10 days, take out the kelp, let it dry completely, and then put it back in the rice. Repeating this process several times can prevent the rice from getting moldy or infested with insects.
