Four Nutrient-Rich Diets That Are Hard for the Elderly to Digest.

Must-Read: Four Nutritious Foods That Are Hard for the Elderly to Digest

Many elderly people now focus on nourishing their bodies, but due to the decline in their digestive function, some highly nutritious foods can not only cause indigestion but even harm their health if consumed in excess. The following four foods should not be eaten in large amounts by the elderly.

1. Tremella Mushroom

Tremella mushrooms are nutritious and have effects such as nourishing the kidneys, moistening the lungs, and promoting fluid production, making them quite popular among the elderly. However, clinically, it is also common for elderly people to suffer from intestinal obstruction from improper consumption. This is because the elderly have poor digestive function, and tremella mushrooms are not easy to digest. Eating too much at once or consuming them for several consecutive meals can cause intestinal obstruction, characterized by paroxysmal abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, bloating, constipation, and cessation of gas from the anus. In severe cases, surgical treatment may be required.

2. Fish Roe

Fish roe is a nutritious food rich in protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamins, and riboflavin. It is also high in cholesterol and serves as a good supplement and nourisher for the human brain and bone marrow. However, the elderly should eat it as little as possible because of its high cholesterol content, which is not beneficial in large amounts.

Additionally, although fish roe is small, it is difficult to cook thoroughly and is hard to digest, easily leading to indigestion and diarrhea after consumption. Therefore, fish roe must be cooked well through, and one should avoid eating too much of it.

3. Sunflower Seeds

Although sunflower seeds are nutritious and delicious, they are not suitable for the elderly.

First, sunflower seeds are high in oil, and most of these oils are unsaturated fatty acids. Consuming too much not only depletes choline in the body, disrupting fat metabolism and causing fat to deposit in the liver, which affects the normal function of liver cells and leads to liver dysfunction, but it can also easily lead to connective tissue hyperplasia, and even induce liver tissue necrosis or cirrhosis.

Second, some spices used in roasting sunflower seeds, such as cinnamon and Sichuan peppercorns, can irritate the stomach to some extent.

4. Tofu

Tofu is a common food with high nutritional value, but it is not advisable for the elderly to eat too much of it.

Tofu contains extremely rich protein, as well as phytic acid and flatulence factors. Consuming too much at once not only hinders the body's absorption of iron but can also easily lead to protein indigestion, causing discomfort symptoms such as bloating and diarrhea. Furthermore, the soybeans used to make tofu contain a substance called saponin, which not only helps prevent atherosclerosis but also promotes the excretion of iodine in the body, leading to iodine deficiency.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, tofu is considered to have a "cold" nature. Therefore, people with a cold stomach, those prone to diarrhea, bloating, or a weak spleen, as well as those with kidney deficiency and frequent nocturnal emissions, should also avoid eating too much of it.
