4 Foods Not to Be Paired with Pork

Pork is a major staple in daily life, known for its benefits of tonifying the body, nourishing yin and moistening dryness, and enriching the muscles and skin. However, it should not be consumed simultaneously with four types of food, otherwise, it can be harmful to your health!

Pork is one of the most commonly consumed foods, with people eating it almost every day. And precisely because of this frequent contact, there are numerous ways to cook this traditional delicacy.

However, while variety in dishes is good, a lack of nutritional knowledge and random pairing can affect your health. The following four foods should not be eaten with pork.

1. Soybeans

From the perspective of modern nutrition, soybeans are not suitable to be paired with pork because they contain a high amount of phytic acid, with 60%--80% of phosphorus present in the form of phytic acid.

It often forms complexes with proteins and mineral elements, affecting the availability of both and reducing their utilization efficiency.

Furthermore, minerals in soybeans, such as calcium, iron, and zinc, bind with those in lean meats and other non-vegetarian foods, thereby interfering with and reducing the human body's absorption of these elements.

Therefore, pork and soybeans are not a suitable combination, and stewing pig's trotters with soybeans is an inappropriate pairing.

2. Sheep Liver

As the saying goes in Traditional Chinese Medicine: "Eating pork with sheep liver causes a feeling of oppression in the chest."

This is mainly because sheep liver has a bitter and cold nature, and is used to tonify the liver, improve vision, and treat liver wind and deficiency heat. Pork is rich and greasy, and can generate dampness-heat in the stomach. From the perspective of food properties, they are not a suitable combination.

Sheep liver has a strong smell, and when stir-fried with pork, it can easily produce an odd flavor. From a culinary standpoint, it is also not advisable.

3. Coriander

Coriander is pungent and warm in nature, and it is believed to deplete qi and harm the spirit. Pork is rich and greasy, which can promote dampness-heat and produce phlegm. Ancient texts record: "All meats have nourishing properties, except for pork, which has none." One depletes qi, while the other has no nourishing properties, so consuming them together is detrimental to the body.

4. Beef

The saying that pork and beef should not be eaten together has a long history. The "Yin Zheng Yao" (Important Principles of Diet) states: "Pork should not be eaten with beef."

This is mainly considered from the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine. From the viewpoint of food properties, pork is sour, cold, and slightly cool, with a greasy and yin-natured quality. Beef, on the other hand, is sweet and warm in nature, and can tonify the spleen and stomach, strengthen the waist and legs, and has the effect of stabilizing the middle and replenishing qi.

One is warm and the other is cold; one tonifies the spleen and stomach, while the other is cold and greasy, which can weaken a person. Their natures are in conflict, so they should not be consumed together.
