How to Make Candied Yams: A Simple Guide

Candied yams, or sugar-frosted yams, are a delightful treat—crisp outside, tender inside, with a sweet, caramelized coating. Here’s an easy, step-by-step guide to making them at home.

Ingredients:

- 500g fresh yams (peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes)

- 100g granulated sugar

- 2 tbsp cornstarch (for a crisp coating)

- 1 egg white (lightly beaten)

- Optional: 1 tsp vanilla extract, a pinch of salt, or food coloring for decoration.

Steps:

1. Prep the Yams: Peel the yams, cut into uniform cubes, and pat dry with a paper towel. This ensures the coating sticks well.

2. Coat the Yams: In a bowl, toss the yams with the beaten egg white until evenly coated. In a separate bag, mix sugar and cornstarch, then add the yams and shake gently to coat each piece thoroughly.

3. Fry or Bake:

- Frying: Heat oil to 160°C (325°F). Deep-fry the yams in batches for 3-5 minutes until golden and crisp. Remove and drain.

- Baking: Arrange yams on a parchment-lined tray. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway, until crispy.

4. Glaze (Optional): For a shinier finish, mix 2 tbsp sugar with 1 tbsp water in a pan, cook until syrupy, then toss the hot yams in the syrup. Spread on a tray to cool.

Serving Suggestions: Enjoy warm as a snack, or top with whipped cream for dessert. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

These candied yams are perfect for holidays or as a sweet indulgence—simple, versatile, and irresistibly delicious!
