How to Make Sushi Bento: A Step-by-Step Guide

Sushi bento is a delightful, portable meal that combines freshness, flavor, and visual appeal. Here’s a simple guide to crafting your own.

First, gather ingredients: sushi rice (seasoned with rice vinegar, sugar, and salt), nori (seaweed sheets), fresh fish (like salmon or tuna), cucumber, avocado, and your favorite veggies. For toppings, consider tobiko (flying fish roe) or sesame seeds.

Start by preparing the sushi rice. Rinse it until the water runs clear, then cook it. While hot, fold in the vinegar mixture gently with a rice paddle. Let it cool to room temperature.

Next, assemble your fillings. Slice fish into thin strips, dice cucumber and avocado, and blanch veggies like carrots for color. To make maki rolls, place a nori sheet on a bamboo mat, spread a layer of rice, leaving a 1-inch border at the top. Arrange fillings horizontally, then roll tightly using the mat, pressing to seal.

For nigiri, wet your hands to prevent sticking, take a small amount of rice, shape it into an oval, and top with a slice of fish.

Finally, arrange your sushi pieces in a bento box, separating different types with dividers. Add sides like edamame, pickled ginger, or a boiled egg for a balanced meal.

With practice, you’ll create beautiful, delicious sushi bento perfect for lunch or a picnic!
