Li Peiwen, Chief Physician of the Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Oncology at China-Japan Friendship Hospital, stated that pumpkin tonifies the middle jiao, replenishes qi, strengthens the spleen, warms the stomach, detoxifies, and alleviates pain. It is used for symptoms such as fatigue and listlessness caused by prolonged illness and body deficiency, or a cold and deficient spleen and stomach, including aversion to cold, poor appetite, reduced food intake, abdominal bloating, and oliguria with edema.

Li Peiwen recommended several therapeutic diet recipes containing pumpkin:

Formula to Strengthen the Spleen and Replenish Qi

Stew 500 grams of pork ribs until eight-tender, add 500 grams of cubed pumpkin and 200 grams of peeled chestnuts, and simmer over low heat until cooked. It is used for physical weakness and fatigue caused by a cold and deficient spleen and stomach, or insufficiency of the middle qi, as well as general weakness caused by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Pumpkin and Mung Bean Congee

Formula to Strengthen the Spleen and Promote Diuresis

Soak 100 grams of raw Job's tears and 100 grams of mung beans for half a day, then cook them into a congee until tender. Add 200 grams of cubed pumpkin and a few red dates, and simmer over low heat until cooked. It is used for internal retention of dampness, phlegm-fluid retention, poor appetite with bloating, and oliguria with edema caused by spleen deficiency.

Formula to Tonify Deficiency and Nourish the Stomach

Wash one ripe pumpkin (about 500 grams), cut off the top to use as a lid, and scoop out the pulp from the top. Mix two raw duck eggs, a little minced meat with rice, seasonings such as salt and monosodium glutamate, and fill the pumpkin to two-thirds full. Add more water to the top, steam in a steamer, and serve with the pumpkin lid on. Both the entire pumpkin and the rice are edible. It is used for poor appetite, listlessness and fatigue, and sallow complexion caused by prolonged illness or tumors.
