How to Make Homemade Red Bean Buns: A Step-by-Step Guide

Red bean buns, a beloved treat in many Asian cultures, are soft, fluffy, and filled with sweet red bean paste. Making them at home is simpler than you think! Follow this guide to bake delicious batches.

### Step 1: Prepare the Red Bean Paste

Start with dried red beans (or canned for convenience). If using dried beans, soak them overnight, then boil until tender. Mash the cooked beans and cook with sugar (adjust to taste) and a pinch of salt over low heat until thick. For a smoother texture, blend the paste. Let it cool completely before use.

### Step 2: Make the Dough

In a bowl, mix 300g all-purpose flour, 3g yeast, and 30g sugar. Gradually add 150ml warm milk (≈40°C) and 15ml oil, kneading into a smooth, elastic dough (about 10 minutes). Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.

### Step 3: Shape the Buns

Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal balls. Roll each into a small circle. Place a tablespoon of cooled red bean paste in the center, wrap the dough around it, and pinch the seal tightly to prevent leakage. Roll the bun gently to smooth the surface.

### Step 4: Proof and Steam

Line a steamer with parchment paper. Place the buns inside, leaving space to expand. Let them rest for 15–20 minutes. Steam over high heat for 15–20 minutes. Turn off the heat and let them sit for 5 minutes before opening the lid to avoid deflation.

### Enjoy!

These buns are best served warm, with a soft exterior and a sweet, aromatic filling. Customize by adding sesame seeds or a drizzle of honey. Happy baking!
