How to Make Perfect Caviar Sushi: A Step-by-Step Guide

Caviar sushi, or "ikura sushi," is a luxurious delicacy prized for its briny burst and elegant presentation. Mastering it at home is simple with the right technique. Here’s a comprehensive guide:

Ingredients & Tools: You’ll need sushi-grade rice (short-grain), Japanese rice vinegar, sugar, salt, nori (seaweed sheets), fresh ikura (salmon roe), and a sharp knife. Essential tools include a rice cooker, bamboo mat, and small bowl for seasoning.

Step 1: Prepare the Sushi Rice

Rinse 2 cups of rice until water runs clear, then cook in a rice cooker with equal parts water. While cooking, mix 2 tbsp rice vinegar, 1 tbsp sugar, and 1 tsp salt until dissolved. Once rice is done, transfer to a wooden bowl, fold in the vinegar mixture gently using a rice paddle, and fan to cool.

Step 2: Form the Sushi Base

Place a nori sheet on a bamboo mat, spread a thin layer of rice (about ¾ cup), leaving 1 inch bare at the top. Wet your fingers to prevent sticking.

Step 3: Add the Ikura

Carefully spoon 1–2 tbsp of ikura over the rice, distributing evenly. For a simpler version, top a small rice ball (onigiri) with ikura.

Step 4: Serve & Enjoy

Roll the sushi tightly using the mat, then slice into bite-sized pieces with a wet knife. Serve immediately on a chilled plate, garnished with shiso leaves if desired. Pair with soy sauce and pickled ginger.

With fresh ingredients and precision, your homemade caviar sushi will rival restaurant quality—celebratory, exquisite, and utterly delicious!
