How to Make Japanese Omelette Rice (Omurice)

Japanese omurice, a beloved comfort food, features a fluffy, golden omelette enveloping savory ketchup rice. Here’s a simple guide to recreate this dish at home.

Step 1: Prepare the Rice

Sauté diced onions, carrots, and chicken (or ham) in butter until cooked. Add cooked rice, 2-3 tbsp tomato ketchup, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well until the rice is evenly coated. Set aside.

Step 2: Make the Omelette

Whisk 3 eggs with a tbsp of milk, salt, and pepper. Heat a non-stick pan with oil, pour in the eggs, and swirl to form a thin round. Cook until the edges set but the center remains slightly runny.

Step 3: Assemble

Place the ketchup rice on one half of the omelette. Fold the other half over, like an envelope, using a spatula to shape it neatly. For a classic touch, drizzle extra ketchup or grated cheese on top.

Variations

Try adding mushrooms, peas, or curry paste to the rice for depth. For a "Western-style" twist, top with demi-glace sauce.

With its perfect balance of textures and flavors, omurice is a crowd-pleaser. Enjoy this comforting dish with a side salad for a complete meal!
