How to Make Bitter Melon Tea: A Simple Guide

Bitter melon tea, valued for its potential health benefits like blood sugar regulation, is easy to prepare at home. Here’s a basic guide to get you started.

Ingredients & Tools: 1 fresh bitter melon (about 200g), 2 cups water, honey or lemon (optional), a knife, cutting board, pot, and strainer.

Step 1: Prepare the Bitter Melon

Wash the bitter melon thoroughly. Cut it in half, scoop out the seeds and pith (they are bitterest), then slice it into thin 1/8-inch pieces. For a milder flavor, soak the slices in salted water for 15 minutes, then rinse and drain.

Step 2: Simmer or Steep

*Simmer Method*: Place slices in a pot with water, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes until the melon is soft. Strain and discard the solids.

*Steep Method*: For a lighter tea, blanch slices in boiling water for 1 minute, then transfer to a teapot. Add 2 cups of hot water (not boiling, to preserve nutrients), steep for 5–8 minutes, and strain.

Step 3: Customize

Serve hot or chilled. Add honey, lemon, or ginger to balance bitterness. For a stronger flavor, use more slices; for a milder taste, reduce steeping time.

Enjoy this refreshing, health-boosting tea daily!
