How to Make Steamed Peach Buns: A Simple Guide

Steamed peach buns, or *tao bao*, are symbolic of longevity and good fortune in Chinese culture. These soft, slightly sweet, pink-tinted buns resemble peaches and are often enjoyed during birthdays or festivals. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making them at home.

Ingredients:

- 500g all-purpose flour

- 300ml warm milk (≈40°C)

- 5g active dry yeast

- 50g sugar

- 1 egg

- 30g butter, softened

- Pinch of salt

- Pink food coloring (optional)

- Red bean paste or sweetened lotus seed paste for filling

Steps:

1. Activate yeast: Mix yeast with warm milk and 1 tsp sugar. Let sit for 10 minutes until frothy.

2. Make dough: In a large bowl, combine flour, remaining sugar, salt, egg, and yeast mixture. Knead into a smooth dough. Add butter and knead until elastic (about 15-20 minutes).

3. Proof dough: Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.

4. Shape buns: Punch down dough and divide into small portions. Flatten each, wrap with filling, and seal tightly. Shape into a peach-like form by pinching one end to a point.

5. Color and steam: Add a drop of pink food coloring to dough for color (optional). Place buns on parchment-lined steamer trays. Let proof again for 20 minutes.

6. Steam: Bring water to a boil in a steamer. Cook buns over medium-high heat for 15-20 minutes. Turn off heat and let rest for 5 minutes before opening the lid.

Tips: For a glossy finish, brush buns with a light sugar glaze after steaming. Enjoy these delicate buns as a wholesome treat, celebrating tradition with every bite!
