How to Make Stir-Fried Yam: A Simple Guide

Stir-fried yam is a nutritious, versatile dish that’s easy to prepare. Here’s a basic guide to get you started, with tips for customizations.

Ingredients: Fresh yam (500g, peeled and sliced), garlic (2 cloves, minced), ginger (1 tsp, grated), green onions (for garnish), cooking oil (2 tbsp), light soy sauce (1 tbsp), oyster sauce (1 tsp), salt (to taste), and a pinch of sugar (optional).

Steps:

1. Prep the yam: Peel the yam and slice it into thin, uniform rounds (about 0.5cm thick) to ensure even cooking. Soak in water for 10 minutes to remove excess starch, then drain and pat dry.

2. Heat the wok: Add oil to a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, stir-fry minced garlic and grated ginger until fragrant (about 30 seconds).

3. Cook the yam: Add the yam slices and stir-fry for 3–4 minutes until they soften slightly. For extra flavor, splash in 2 tbsp of water, cover, and cook for 2 more minutes until tender.

4. Season: Drizzle in soy sauce and oyster sauce, add salt (and sugar if desired), and toss well to coat. Stir-fry for 1 minute until the sauce thickens.

5. Garnish and serve: Turn off the heat, garnish with chopped green onions, and serve hot with rice or as a side dish.

Customizations: Add bell peppers, carrots, or mushrooms for color and crunch. For a spicier kick, mix in chili flakes or fresh chilies. Enjoy this healthy, delicious dish in under 20 minutes!
