How to Make Strawberry Jam: A Simple Guide

Making strawberry jam at home is a delightful way to preserve the season’s sweetness. Here’s a straightforward method to create delicious, homemade strawberry jam.

Start by selecting 2 pounds of fresh, ripe strawberries. Hull the strawberries and chop them into small pieces. For every 2 pounds of strawberries, use 1 cup of granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice. The lemon juice enhances flavor and aids preservation.

In a large saucepan, combine the strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes to allow the berries to release their juices. Then, bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Once boiling, reduce the heat and let it simmer for 15–20 minutes, or until the jam thickens. To test for doneness, place a small amount on a chilled plate; if it wrinkles when pushed, it’s ready.

Remove the jam from the heat and skim off any foam. Carefully ladle the hot jam into sterilized jars, leaving ¼ inch of headspace. Wipe the jar rims, seal the lids, and process the jars in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes to ensure proper sealing.

Allow the jars to cool completely before labeling and storing. This homemade strawberry jam is perfect on toast, pancakes, or as a gift, capturing the vibrant taste of summer in every jar.
