Pumpkin mantou rolls are a delightful twist on traditional steamed buns, combining the earthy sweetness of pumpkin with a soft, fluffy texture. Here’s a simple recipe to guide you through making these golden treats at home.
Ingredients:
- 200g steamed and mashed pumpkin (ensure it’s cool and excess water is drained)
- 300g all-purpose flour
- 30g sugar (adjust to taste)
- 3g active dry yeast
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- Warm water (as needed, about 120ml)
Steps:
1. Prepare the dough: In a large bowl, mix mashed pumpkin, sugar, and yeast. Gradually add warm water and oil, stirring until combined. Slowly incorporate the flour, kneading into a smooth, non-sticky dough (about 10 minutes).
2. First proof: Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
3. Shape the rolls: Punch down the dough and divide it into small equal portions. Roll each portion into a 15cm-long strip, then coil it into a spiral or roll it up like a jelly roll.
4. Second proof: Arrange the rolls on a parchment-lined steamer tray, leaving space between them. Cover and let them rise for 20 minutes.
5. Steam: Bring water to a boil in the steamer, then place the tray over high heat. Steam for 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and let the rolls rest for 5 minutes before opening the lid to prevent collapsing.
Serve warm as a breakfast treat or snack. These rolls are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Enjoy your homemade pumpkin mantou rolls!
