Introduction: It is well known that a healthy diet leads to a healthy life, and a study indicates that women who consume a large amount of whole grain foods have a significantly reduced risk of stroke.
Whole grain foods retain a large amount of vitamins and dietary fiber from the bran, making them highly nutritious. They contain no fat and are low in calories, making them the best food for maintaining a slim figure. Whole grain foods lower levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the body, can prevent low-density lipoprotein (LDL) from oxidative damage, and thus avoid the formation of plaque in arteries, which can lead to heart disease and stroke.
The study showed that women who consumed two to three slices of whole grain bread daily had a 30% to 40% lower risk of stroke compared to those who consumed only half a slice of whole grain bread daily.
This study, led by researchers at Harvard University, involved 75,521 participants and was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in September 2000.

Between 1984 and 1996, a total of 352 participants suffered a stroke, most of which were ischemic strokes, caused by a blockage in the brain's arteries. Approximately 600,000 people in the United States suffer from this type of stroke each year.
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. The risk of stroke is similar for men and women, but women have a higher fatality rate from stroke.
The study found that the more whole grain foods women consumed, the lower their chances of having a stroke.
Researchers recommend that people should consume more whole grain foods to replace refined grain products. Even replacing one serving of refined grain products with a serving of whole grain products daily can have a significant benefit in reducing the risk of ischemic stroke.

The whole grain foods consumed by the participants in the study included whole wheat bread, whole wheat ready-to-eat cereal, and whole wheat popcorn, while refined grain products included white bread and pastries.
Researchers stated that it is currently unclear why whole grain foods have a preventive effect against stroke, but it may be related to their lower content of "bad" cholesterol. Bad cholesterol, or low-density lipoprotein (LDL), clogs arteries.
The study had hypothesized that vitamin E and dietary fiber in whole grain foods were the reasons for the reduced risk of stroke. However, the study found that the reduction in stroke risk was independent of these factors, with no causal relationship. Therefore, it was concluded that the reduction in stroke risk is due to other mechanisms.
