How to Make Sweet and Sour Pork Belly with Hawthorn

Sweet and Sour Pork Belly with Hawthorn is a beloved Chinese dish that balances rich, tender meat with a tangy, slightly sweet sauce. Here’s a simple guide to making it at home.

Ingredients:

500g pork belly (cut into 2cm cubes), 10 hawthorn berries (soaked and pitted), 3 tbsp sugar, 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp cooking wine, 1 star anise, 1 slice ginger, 2 cloves garlic, and water.

Steps:

1. Prepare the pork: Blanch the pork cubes in boiling water for 3 minutes to remove impurities. Drain and set aside.

2. Cook the sauce: Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pot, add sugar, and stir over low heat until caramelized. Toss in the pork, stirring to coat evenly.

3. Simmer: Add soy sauce, cooking wine, ginger, garlic, and star anise. Pour in water until the pork is half-submerged. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes.

4. Add hawthorn: Stir in the hawthorn berries, continue simmering for 10–15 minutes until the pork is tender and the sauce thickens. Adjust seasoning with extra sugar or soy sauce if needed.

5. Serve: Transfer to a plate and garnish with sesame seeds. Enjoy with steamed rice!

This dish’s unique tanginess from hawthorn cuts through the pork’s richness, creating a harmonious flavor. Perfect for family meals or festive gatherings!
