How to Make Shell Steamed Buns (Shell Mantou)

Shell steamed buns, or "贝壳馒头" in Chinese, are adorable, soft, and visually appealing buns shaped like seashells. Perfect for breakfast or as a snack, they are surprisingly easy to make. Here’s a simple guide:

Ingredients:

- 500g all-purpose flour

- 300ml warm milk (or water)

- 5g active dry yeast

- 30g sugar

- A pinch of salt

Steps:

1. Activate the yeast: Mix yeast and sugar in warm milk. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.

2. Make the dough: Combine flour and salt in a large bowl. Pour in the yeast mixture and knead into a smooth, elastic dough (about 10 minutes). Add a little oil if too sticky.

3. First rise: Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.

4. Shape the buns: Punch down the dough and divide into small balls (50g each). Roll each ball into an oval, then use a knife or dough scraper to press lines on top to mimic seashell patterns.

5. Second rise: Place the buns on a parchment-lined steamer tray. Let them rise for 20 minutes.

6. Steam: Bring water to a boil in a steamer. Steam the buns over medium-high heat for 15–18 minutes. Turn off the heat and let them sit for 5 minutes before opening the lid.

Tips: For extra flavor, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract or cocoa powder to the dough. Enjoy them plain or with butter! These buns are not only tasty but also a fun treat for kids.
