How to Make Colorful Glutinous Rice: A Step-by-Step Guide

Colorful glutinous rice, a traditional delicacy in Southwest China, is not only visually stunning with its vibrant hues—black, red, yellow, white, and purple—but also carries cultural symbolism of harmony and prosperity. Making it at home is simple and fun. Here’s a detailed guide.

Ingredients: Glutinous rice (5 cups), natural colorings (black: butterfly pea flower or black glutinous rice; red: red yeast rice or roselle; yellow: turmeric or gardenia; purple: purple sweet potato or butterfly pea flower with alum; white: plain glutinous rice).

Steps:

1. Prepare the rice: Soak glutinous rice in water for 4–6 hours. Drain and divide into 5 equal portions.

2. Make colorings:

- *Black*: Boil butterfly pea flowers or black glutinous rice, strain the liquid, and soak rice for 6 hours.

- *Red*: Soak red yeast rice or roselle in hot water, then mix with rice.

- *Yellow*: Grate turmeric, extract juice, and soak rice.

- *Purple*: Boil purple sweet potato, mash, and mix with rice; or use butterfly pea flower with alum water for a deeper shade.

- *White*: No coloring needed.

3. Steam: Place each colored rice layer in a steamer basket lined with cloth. Steam over high heat for 30–40 minutes until tender.

4. Serve: Let it cool slightly, then shape into balls or serve as is. Enjoy with honey or coconut milk.
