How to Steam Fish Perfectly: A Simple Guide

Steaming is a healthy and delicious way to prepare fish, preserving its natural flavor and nutrients. Here’s a basic guide to making perfect steamed fish every time.

First, choose fresh, whole fish like sea bass, tilapia, or pomfret. Clean the fish thoroughly, removing scales, gills, and内脏. Score the flesh lightly on both sides to ensure even cooking. Marinate the fish with a pinch of salt, a splash of rice wine, and sliced ginger for 10-15 minutes to remove any fishy odor.

Next, prepare the steaming plate. Line it with ginger or scallion stalks to elevate the fish and allow steam to circulate. Place the marinated fish on the plate, then top with more ginger slices, scallions, and a few drops of light soy sauce.

Steam the fish over high heat. For a 1-pound fish, steam for 8-10 minutes. Avoid overcooking, as the flesh will become dry. To check doneness, insert a chopstick into the thickest part—if it goes in smoothly, the fish is ready.

Finally, heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a small pan until smoking, pour it over the scallions and ginger to release their aroma, and garnish with fresh cilantro. Serve hot with steamed rice for a light, satisfying meal. This simple method highlights the fish’s delicate taste, making it a favorite in home cooking.
