A Guide to Making Pocket Bread

Pocket bread, also known as pita bread, is a versatile and easy-to-make staple perfect for sandwiches, dips, or enjoying on its own. Here’s a simple guide to crafting this delicious bread at home.

Ingredients: Combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast, 1 tsp sugar, ¾ tsp salt, 2/3 cup warm water, and 2 tbsp olive oil.

Steps:

1. Activate yeast: Mix warm water, sugar, and yeast; let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

2. Make dough: In a large bowl, whisk flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and olive oil, stirring until a shaggy dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

3. First rise: Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.

4. Shape and rest: Punch down dough, divide into 8 equal balls, and let rest for 10 minutes. Roll each ball into a ¼-inch thick circle.

5. Bake: Preheat oven to 475°F (245°C). Place dough circles on a baking sheet or preheated pizza stone. Bake for 5-7 minutes until puffed and lightly golden. For classic pockets, bake until they puff, then gently press to create an opening.

Tips: For extra flavor, add herbs or whole wheat flour. Serve warm with hummus, falafel, or your favorite fillings. Enjoy your homemade pocket bread!
