How to Make Tangyuan: A Simple Guide

Tangyuan, or sweet glutinous rice balls, are a beloved Chinese dessert symbolizing reunion and happiness. Making them at home is easy and fun. Here’s a basic guide to get you started.

Ingredients:

- 150g glutinous rice flour

- 80ml warm water

- 1 tbsp sugar (optional)

- Fillings of your choice: peanut butter, black sesame paste, red bean paste, or fresh fruits.

Steps:

1. Prepare the Dough: In a bowl, mix glutinous rice flour and sugar. Gradually add warm water, stirring until a soft dough forms. Knead for 5 minutes until smooth, then let it rest for 10 minutes.

2. Make Fillings: If using solid fillings, roll them into small balls (about 1cm each). For fruit fillings, dice them into tiny pieces.

3. Shape Tangyuan: Take a small piece of dough (about 2cm in diameter), flatten it, and place a filling in the center. Gently wrap the dough around the filling, sealing it completely. Roll it into a smooth ball.

4. Cook: Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add tangyuan and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until they float to the surface. Reduce heat and simmer for another 2 minutes.

5. Serve: Remove tangyuan with a slotted spoon. Enjoy them in hot ginger syrup, sweet fermented rice soup, or plain with a sprinkle of nuts.

Tips:

- Dust dough with flour if it’s too sticky.

- Freeze uncooked tangyuan for later use.

- Get creative with colors by adding matcha powder or beet juice to the dough!

With simple steps and endless variations, tangyuan are a delightful treat for any occasion. Happy cooking!
