A Guide to Making Money Bread

Money bread, a soft, sweet loaf often shaped like ingots or coins, is a popular treat in many cultures, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. Making it at home is simple with this versatile recipe.

Ingredients: 300g all-purpose flour, 30g sugar, 3g yeast, 1 egg, 120ml warm milk, 30g butter (softened), a pinch of salt, and optional vanilla or almond extract for flavor.

Steps:

1. Activate yeast: Mix yeast with 1 tbsp warm milk and 1 tsp sugar; let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.

2. Combine dough: In a bowl, whisk flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add the activated yeast, egg, and remaining milk. Knead into a smooth dough (about 10 minutes).

3. First rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1–2 hours until doubled.

4. Shape and second rise: Punch down dough, divide into small portions, and shape into oval or coin-like rounds. Place on a baking sheet, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes.

5. Bake: Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Brush tops with milk or egg wash for a golden finish. Bake for 15–20 minutes until risen and lightly browned.

Variations: Add raisins, chocolate chips, or matcha powder for flavor. For a savory twist, omit sugar and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Enjoy this delightful bread as a snack, dessert, or gift—perfect for any occasion!
