Tao Su, or Chinese walnut cookies, are beloved for their crumbly texture and nutty sweetness. Here’s a simple recipe to bake these delightful treats at home.
Ingredients:
- 150g all-purpose flour
- 50g granulated sugar
- 50g lard (or vegetable shortening)
- 1 egg yolk
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 30g chopped walnuts
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- Pinch of salt
Steps:
1. Preheat & Prep: Preheat the oven to 160°C (320°F). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
3. Combine Wet & Dry: Add lard, egg yolk, and vanilla. Use your hands to mix until a dough forms—do not overwork.
4. Shape the Cookies: Take small dough portions (about 1 tbsp each), flatten slightly, and press a walnut on top. Place them on the tray.
5. Bake: Bake for 18–20 minutes until golden. Let cool on the tray for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Tips: For extra flavor, replace 20g flour with roasted sesame powder. Ensure ingredients are at room temperature for smoother dough. Enjoy these crispy, buttery cookies with tea or coffee!
