How to Make Tangyuan at Home

Tangyuan, sweet glutinous rice balls, are a cherished Chinese dessert symbolizing family reunion. Making them at home is simple and fun. Here’s a basic guide to get you started.

Ingredients: For the dough, you’ll need 200g glutinous rice flour, 150ml warm water, and a pinch of salt. For fillings, options are endless: black sesame paste (mix 50g roasted sesame seeds with 1 tbsp sugar and 1 tbsp melted butter), peanut butter, or fresh chopped fruits like mango.

Steps:

1. Make the dough: In a bowl, gradually add warm water to the flour, mixing until a smooth, non-sticky dough forms. Knead for 5 minutes, then let it rest for 15 minutes.

2. Prepare fillings: Roll sesame or peanut filling into small, 1cm balls.

3. Shape tangyuan: Take a dough portion, flatten it, and wrap a filling ball inside. Pinch the edges closed and roll into a smooth ball. Repeat for all dough.

4. Cook: Bring a pot of water to a boil. Gently drop in tangyuan, stirring gently to prevent sticking. Cook until they float (about 3-5 minutes).

Serving: Serve hot in a sweet ginger syrup or chilled with coconut flakes. For extra flavor, add osmanthus wine or red dates to the syrup.
