How to Make Homemade Sweet Osmanthus: A Simple Guide

Sweet osmanthus, with its golden hue and fragrant aroma, is a versatile ingredient in teas, desserts, and pastries. Making it at home is easy and ensures a pure, natural flavor. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide.

First, gather fresh osmanthus flowers (about 200g) and 300g of rock sugar. Gently pick the flowers, removing stems and impurities. Rinse them briefly in cold water and pat dry with a paper towel.

Next, layer the flowers and sugar in a clean, airtight jar. Start with a base of sugar, then add a single layer of flowers, repeating until all ingredients are used. Press lightly to compact the layers.

Seal the jar tightly and store it in a cool, dark place for 3–7 days. The sugar will gradually draw out the flowers’ moisture, creating a syrupy texture. For a richer flavor, you can also lightly marinate the flowers in salt for 10 minutes before rinsing to enhance their fragrance.

Once the osmanthus turns soft and the sugar dissolves into a thick syrup, your sweet osmanthus is ready! Store it in the refrigerator for up to six months. Use it to flavor mooncakes, add to oatmeal, or sweeten hot tea for a delightful taste of autumn. Enjoy the homemade goodness!
