How to Make Stir-Fried Rice Cakes: A Simple Guide

Stir-fried rice cakes (Nian Gao) are a beloved dish, loved for their chewy texture and savory flavor. Here’s a simple guide to making them at home.

Ingredients: You’ll need 300g fresh or frozen rice cakes, 2 bell peppers (sliced), 1 carrot (julienned), 2 cloves garlic (minced), 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 1 tablespoon oyster sauce, 1 teaspoon sugar, and vegetable oil.

Steps:

1. Prep the rice cakes: If using frozen ones, thaw them first. Fresh rice cakes can be used directly.

2. Stir-fry vegetables: Heat oil in a wok over medium-high heat. Sauté garlic until fragrant, then add bell peppers and carrots. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until slightly softened.

3. Cook the rice cakes: Add the rice cakes to the wok. Pour in 50ml water, cover, and simmer for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the rice cakes become tender.

4. Season: Mix in soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sugar. Stir well to coat everything evenly. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens.

5. Serve: Transfer to a plate and garnish with sesame seeds or green onions if desired.
