How to Make Delicate "Glass Heart" Cookies

Creating "Glass Heart" cookies is a delightful way to combine sweetness with artistry. These fragile, translucent treats resemble stained glass and are perfect for holidays or gifts. Here’s a simple guide:

Ingredients:

- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

- 1/2 cup granulated sugar

- 1 egg yolk

- 1 tsp vanilla extract

- 2 cups all-purpose flour

- 1/4 tsp salt

- Gel food coloring (red, pink, or blue)

- 1 egg white, lightly beaten

Instructions:

1. Make the Dough: Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg yolk and vanilla. Gradually add flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms. Divide into portions; tint each with gel coloring. Chill for 1 hour.

2. Shape the Hearts: Roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Use a heart-shaped cutter to form cookies. With a smaller cutter, cut a window in the center of half the hearts.

3. Create the "Glass" Effect: Crush hard candies (e.g., Jolly Ranchers) into fine powder. Spoon a layer into the center of solid hearts, then top with cut-out hearts. Seal edges gently.

4. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush edges with beaten egg white for shine. Bake for 8–10 minutes until edges are golden. Cool completely; the candy centers will harden into "glass."

Tip: Store in an airtight container to preserve the crisp, fragile texture. These cookies are as beautiful as they are delicious!
