How to Make Japanese Tofu in Sweet and Sour Sauce

Japanese tofu, known for its silky texture, is a versatile ingredient that shines in this sweet and sour dish. Here’s a simple yet delicious recipe to recreate it at home.

Ingredients:

- 2 packs Japanese tofu (silken tofu)

- 1 cup cornstarch

- 2 eggs, beaten

- 1 cup tomato ketchup

- 2 tbsp soy sauce

- 1 tbsp sugar

- 1 tsp vinegar

- Vegetable oil for frying

- Optional: diced bell peppers, onions, or pineapple for color.

Steps:

1. Prepare the tofu: Cut each tofu pack into 4 thick cylinders. Pat dry lightly.

2. Coat the tofu: Dip each cylinder in beaten eggs, then roll in cornstarch until fully coated.

3. Deep-fry: Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry tofu until golden brown (3-4 minutes per side). Remove and drain on paper towels.

4. Make the sauce: In a small bowl, mix ketchup, soy sauce, sugar, and vinegar until smooth.

5. Combine: In a pan, heat 1 tbsp oil. Sauté veggies (if using) for 2 minutes. Add the sauce, bring to a simmer, then return fried tofu to the pan. Coat evenly and cook for 1-2 minutes.

6. Serve: Garnish with sesame seeds or chopped green onions. Enjoy hot with rice!

This dish balances crispy exteriors with tender tofu, all enveloped in a tangy, sweet sauce—a perfect fusion of simplicity and flavor.
