How to Steam Mandarin Fish with Osmanthus: A Culinary Guide

Steaming mandarin fish with osmanthus is a delicate, fragrant dish that highlights the freshness of the fish and the subtle sweetness of osmanthus blossoms. Here’s a simple yet refined recipe to recreate this Chinese classic at home.

Ingredients: 1 fresh mandarin fish (about 500g), 10g dried osmanthus blossoms, 2 slices of ginger, 2 scallions, 1 tbsp light soy sauce, 1 tsp Shaoxing wine, 1 tbsp sesame oil, salt, and a pinch of sugar.

Steps:

1. Prep the Fish: Clean the fish, score both sides diagonally, and pat dry. Rub with salt and Shaoxing wine, then stuff the cavity with ginger and scallions. Let marinate for 15 minutes.

2. Steam: Bring water to a boil in a wok. Place the fish on a heatproof dish, scatter osmanthus blossoms on top, and steam for 8–10 minutes over high heat until the flesh is opaque and flakes easily.

3. Season: Discard ginger and scallions. Drizzle light soy sauce and sesame oil over the fish. For extra fragrance, briefly soak osmanthus in warm water before use, then sprinkle them on the dish.

4. Serve: Enjoy immediately with steamed rice to savor the tender, subtly sweet, and aromatic flavors.

This method preserves the fish’s natural texture while infusing it with the floral essence of osmanthus, creating a harmonious and elegant dish perfect for any occasion.
