Scallion Flower Rolls: A Step-by-Step Guide

Making fluffy, fragrant scallion flower rolls at home is easier than you think! Follow this simple recipe to enjoy bakery-style treats fresh from your oven.

Ingredients:

- 300g all-purpose flour

- 2 tsp instant yeast

- 1 tsp sugar

- 1/2 tsp salt

- 120ml warm milk

- 1 tbsp vegetable oil

- 3-4 green onions, finely chopped

- 1 tsp salt (for scallion filling)

- 1 tbsp sesame oil (optional, for brushing)

Steps:

1. Prepare the dough: In a large bowl, mix flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Gradually add warm milk and oil, knead into a smooth dough (about 10 minutes). Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, until doubled in size.

2. Make the filling: Combine chopped green onions, 1 tsp salt, and sesame oil (if using). Set aside.

3. Shape the rolls: Punch down the dough and roll it into a 30x20cm rectangle. Spread the scallion mixture evenly, leaving a 1cm border. Roll up tightly like a Swiss roll, then cut into 6-8 equal pieces.

4. Create flower shapes: Place each piece cut-side up. Press the center gently, then cut 4-5 slits from the center to the outer edge (without separating the layers). Twist each slit slightly to form a "flower."

5. Proof and bake: Arrange rolls on a baking sheet, cover, and let them rise for 20 minutes. Brush with milk or egg wash. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 15-20 minutes until golden.

Enjoy these warm, savory rolls on their own or with soup! They’re perfect for breakfast or as a side dish.
