How to Make菊花卷 (Chrysanthemum Rolls): A Simple Guide

菊花卷, a delicate and visually appealing Chinese steamed bun, gets its name from its chrysanthemum-like shape. Here’s a basic recipe to create this fluffy, beautiful dish at home.

Ingredients:

- 300g all-purpose flour

- 2g active dry yeast

- 150ml warm water

- 1 tsp sugar

- A pinch of salt

Steps:

1. Prepare the dough: Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water, let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy. Mix flour and salt in a bowl, then pour in the yeast mixture. Knead into a smooth dough, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled in size.

2. Shape the rolls: Punch down the dough and roll it into a 0.5cm thick rectangle. Brush with a thin layer of oil (optional for extra softness). Cut the dough into 2cm wide strips. Take one strip, fold it in half lengthwise, and use scissors to make small, evenly spaced cuts along the unfolded side, leaving 1cm uncut at the end.

3. Form the chrysanthemum: Gently stretch the cut strip and roll it from the uncut end into a spiral. Pinch the bottom to secure. Repeat with remaining dough.

4. Steam: Place the rolls on a parchment-lined steamer, leaving space for expansion. Let them rest for 15 minutes. Steam over high heat for 12-15 minutes. Turn off the heat and let them sit for 5 minutes before opening the lid.
