How to Make Braised Beef with Bamboo Shoots

Braised beef with bamboo shoots is a hearty, flavorful dish that tenderizes beef while absorbing earthy notes from the shoots. Here’s a simple guide to mastering it.

Ingredients: 500g beef chuck (cut into 2-inch cubes), 300g bamboo shoots (fresh or canned, sliced), 2 tbsp cooking oil, 1 sliced onion, 3 minced garlic cloves, 1 tbsp ginger (grated), 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp oyster sauce, 1 tsp sugar, 5 cups beef broth, 1 star anise, 1 cinnamon stick, and salt to taste.

Steps:

1. Prepare the beef: Marinate cubes in 1 tbsp soy sauce, ginger, and garlic for 20 minutes.

2. Sear the beef: Heat oil in a pot over medium-high heat. Brown beef on all sides, then remove.

3. Sauté aromatics: In the same pot, fry onion, garlic, and ginger until fragrant.

4. Simmer: Return beef, add bamboo shoots, remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, broth, star anise, and cinnamon. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 1.5–2 hours until beef is tender.

5. Adjust and serve: Discard star anise and cinnamon. Season with salt if needed. Garnish with green onions and serve hot with rice.

Tips: For canned bamboo shoots, boil briefly to remove bitterness. Slow cooking ensures melt-in-your-mouth beef. Enjoy this comforting Asian classic!
