How to Make Candied Orange Peel: A Step-by-Step Guide

Candied orange peel is a delightful treat, blending sweet and citrusy flavors. Perfect for snacking, baking, or gifting, here’s a simple guide to making it at home.

Ingredients & Tools:

2-3 large oranges, 1 cup sugar, ½ cup water, a saucepan, a strainer, and a wire rack.

Step 1: Prepare the Peels

Wash oranges thoroughly. Cut off both ends, then score the skin vertically from top to bottom. Peel off the strips in large pieces, using a knife to scrape off most of the white pith (it’s bitter). Cut peels into ¼-inch-wide strips.

Step 2: Blanch the Peels

Place peels in a saucepan, cover with cold water, and simmer for 10 minutes. Drain and repeat twice to remove bitterness. Pat dry with a paper towel.

Step 3: Candy the Peels

In the same saucepan, combine sugar and water, heating until the sugar dissolves. Add peels, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the syrup thickens and peels turn translucent.

Step 4: Dry and Coat

Remove peels with a slotted spoon, letting excess syrup drip off. Roll in granulated sugar (optional) or place on a wire rack to dry for 24 hours. Store in an airtight container for up to a month.

Enjoy these chewy, fragrant peels as a snack or use them to decorate cakes, cookies, or desserts!
