sweet and sour pork ribs

How to Make Sweet and Sour "Ribs" (Vegetarian Version)

Sweet and sour "ribs" are a beloved vegetarian twist on the classic Chinese dish, using ingredients like king oyster mushrooms or seitan to mimic the texture of pork ribs. Here’s a simple guide to recreate this flavorful dish at home.

Ingredients:

- 300g king oyster mushrooms (or seitan), cut into rib-sized strips

- 2 tbsp flour (for coating)

- Oil for frying

- 3 tbsp tomato paste

- 2 tbsp vinegar

- 2 tbsp sugar

- 1 tbsp soy sauce

- 1 tsp ginger, minced

- 1 clove garlic, minced

- 1 bell pepper, sliced (optional)

- Sesame seeds for garnish

Steps:

1. Prepare the "ribs": Pat the mushrooms/seitan dry. Coat them lightly with flour to help them crisp up when fried.

2. Fry: Heat oil in a pan and fry the coated strips until golden brown (3-4 minutes per side). Drain excess oil.

3. Make the sauce: In a small bowl, mix tomato paste, vinegar, sugar, soy sauce, ginger, and garlic until smooth.

4. Simmer: Return the "ribs" to the pan, pour the sauce over them, and add bell pepper if using. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the "ribs."

5. Serve: Garnish with sesame seeds and enjoy with steamed rice or noodles.

This dish balances tangy, sweet, and savory flavors, offering a satisfying crunch and umami depth—a perfect cruelty-free alternative to traditional ribs!
