Yuanbao jiaozi, named after the ancient Chinese gold ingots ("yuanbao"), symbolize wealth and prosperity. These crescent-shaped dumplings are not only delicious but also culturally significant, especially during Lunar New Year. Here’s a simple guide to making them:
Ingredients:
- Dumpling wrappers (store-bought or homemade)
- Filling: 300g ground pork (or chicken/vegetarian), 1 cup shredded cabbage, 2 chopped green onions, 1 tbsp ginger, 1 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tsp sesame oil, salt, and pepper to taste.
Steps:
1. Prepare the filling: Mix all filling ingredients in a bowl. Stir clockwise until sticky; let it rest for 15 minutes to enhance flavor.
2. Fold the dumplings: Place a wrapper in your palm. Add 1 tbsp filling in the center. Fold one side into a semicircle, then pinch the edges to seal. Lift the two corners and press them together, shaping like a ingot with a slightly curved center.
3. Cook: Boil water, add dumplings, and stir gently to prevent sticking. Cook for 3-5 minutes until they float. For a crispier texture, pan-fry them after boiling (potstickers style).
Serving:
Serve hot with dipping sauce: mix soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and chili oil. Yuanbao jiaozi are best enjoyed fresh, bringing luck and warmth to any meal!
